Job Summary:

The position available is night shift. 10p-6a. Days off Monday and Tuesday.

Must be able to work weekends and holidays.

Under the direction of the civilian supervisor, the dispatcher is responsible for facilitating and monitoring all radio traffic. While performing the responsibilities of a dispatcher, he/she is required to react to citizen’s calls for assistance, in both emergency and non-emergency situations and greet and assist citizens who enter the lobby. The dispatcher also performs data entry into the in-house and other related departmental computer systems, receives and accepts bonds, and performs periodic prisoner checks in the jail. It is essential for all personnel associated with the dispatch office to maintain an above average degree of professionalism, while providing services to the community.

Qualifications:

  • 18 years of age.
  • Valid Texas driver license.
  • Valid Social Security card.
  • Must have a high school diploma or an equivalent G.E.D. certification.
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation, to include criminal history, personal credit record, and past work ethic.
  • Must be willing to work any shift, including weekends and holidays.
  • Must successfully complete a dispatch field training program (minimum of 80 hours).

Essential Job Functions:

Communications:

  • Maintain and operate the dispatch console.
  • Answer the police department switchboard.
  • Answer the 911 systems.
  • Conduct systems checks to ensure they are in proper working order.
  • Accept and forward messages as received.
  • Accept and disseminate fax transmittals as received.
  • Initiate pages to supervisors and/or investigators, as needed.
  • Coordinate and communicate with dispatchers and other personnel from outside agencies.

Customer Service:

  • Greet persons on the phone or those who appear in the lobby.
  • Refer complaints to an on-duty supervisor and/or make available approved complaint information.

Computers:

  • Enter, check and remove information from TCIC/NCIC, LIDR and SETCIC.
  • Operate under guidelines set forth by TLETS, which includes but is not limited to, sending computer TTY message.
  • Enter calls into BADGE SE documenting police action.
  • Enter and remove information from in-house databases.

Administrative:

  • Maintain the activity log.
  • Accept and remove house and/or business watches.
  • Maintain the wrecker rotation log.
  • Maintain the warrant service (WS3) log.
  • Maintain the animal lost and found log.
  • Maintain all video equipment and perform the recording responsibilities of the dispatch office.
  • Notarize documents.
  • Accept bonds, local and outside agencies.
  • Keep the dispatch office clean and presentable.
  • Ensure an adequate supply of dispatch forms is on hand.
  • Other administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Operate standard office equipment i.e.; fax machine, paper copier, paper shredder and paper cutter.

Jail responsibilities:

  • Perform hourly welfare checks on prisoners.
  • Ensure prisoners are served meals 3 times per day (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).
  • Notify on-duty supervisor and/or officer of any irregularities while performing jail responsibilities.
  • Operate sally-port doors, leading into the jail area.

Mental demands:

  • Read and communicate effectively (verbal and written).
  • Maintain emotional control under stress and have the ability to make sound decisions, quickly.
  • Should not be unreasonably fearful of heights or claustrophobic
  • Handle situations calmly when people are upset, injured or blood is present.
  • Ability to shift between tasks, without confusion or loss of detail.

Physical requirements:

  • Sitting: Ability to sit at a desk or work in the dispatch office for extended periods.
  • Walking / Running: Frequently on concrete, water and occasionally on rough uneven ground.
  • Lifting / Carrying: Frequently carry light objects. Occasionally weights that may exceed 50 pounds to move department equipment and/or supplies, as needed.
  • Fine Dexterity:To write reports and reconcile funds. To operate computers and office equipment.
  • Vision:Correctable vision with acceptable night vision and depth perception. The ability to read documents and work on a computer monitor for extended periods without the use of non-conventional visual aids.
  • Hearing / Talking:To communicate with supervisors, officers, suspects, witnesses, attorneys, and the general public of all races, ethnic groups and genders under normal circumstances without the use of mechanical aids.
  • Foot Controls:Be able to activate and use a foot control box for the police radio.
  • Standing:The ability to stand for long periods.
  • Pushing / Pulling:To move heavy objects and/or open heavy jail doors.
  • Reaching: Ability to reach from side to side along a workstation, rapidly, while managing separate computer systems.

The nature of police dispatching is such that all types of body positions are assumed to varying degrees, depending on the shift assignment, nature of calls for service and activity generated from the street. A dispatcher may be required during a routine shift to perform many of the above or similar physical requirements at a moments notice.
